Temple of Reclining Buddha
Made of brick & stucco, this gilded Buddha image is 15 mtrs high & 46 mtrs in length – breathtakingly stunning huge! My camera could not capture the complete image on one go…..well, I guess it is meant to be so …….. just as Lord Padmanabha Swamy of Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala, India). Enjoy and experience the bliss in parts as you see! I found myself wandering in and out again to get better glimpses!
The feet alone are about 5 mtrs long & 3 mtrs high depicting auspicious signs of Buddha(signs on his soles were read by a group of brahmins 5 days after his birth) in line with the Srilankan belief. Unfortunately, we could not get a glimpse of the signs as it was under renovation!
Wat Pho, considered to be Thailand’s first open university & embodiment of Thai wisdom and heritage is again a must see in Bangkok! There are many halls enshrining Buddha in different forms. Phra Buddha Chinnasri has a seven-headed naga above his head. Many images and forms of Buddha here reminded me of Vishnu’s different avatars! Hmmm… Buddha is also considered a Vishnu avatar in some texts at home!
Thai temples seem to be a culmination of arts propagated from different countries… India, China, Cambodia, Srilanka! The intrinsic art work is totally impelling … ! I wonder how long did it take for them to complete each single stupa with those beautiful carvings and paintings! The luxurious extravaganza of Grand Palace which is gilded with gold is missing here…. this place is filled with intricate art works and mural paintings!
Wat Pho massage is famous and offers massage courses certified by the Ministry of Education.
